想了一下,我覺得這個解釋比較好,如下:

因為the second直接就可以代表the second lesson,不用再用ONE

改成直述句,如下
a man in civil life is perpetually slandering and backbiting his fello men, and

前面有一個IS了,所以這個可以省略

就像 she is cute and sweet.就不會說成 she is cute and is sweet.
