A man has been confirmed as Hampshire's first case of swine flu, the Health Protection Agency has said.

The student, from Southampton, had recently returned from Washington DC where it is believed he developed symptoms of the virus.

The NHS said he was being treated with anti-viral drugs at home and was responding well to treatment.

The case takes the total number of people confirmed to have the H1N1 virus in the UK to 120.

Simon Higman, of University of Southampton, said: "A student has been confirmed with a case of swine flu.

"He recently returned from Washington DC and isolated himself, taking steps to ensure he didn't mix with other students and staff at the University and other people in Southampton."

An announcement from the Health Protection Agency has confirmed five new cases across the UK.
