字神帝國〈解析托福作文題目中數碼機密〉 - 英檢

我是字神的威廉老師，
今天要跟大家談談”數字”在托福寫作裡面的概念。威廉老師把曾經出現在托福寫作中的
”數字”跟”年紀相關的考點”聚焦出來，順便也補充這類寫作題目中所出現的”主角”
所配合的概念:

一、年輕的Young(er) Children (5 to 10 years old):
這數字不是威廉老師自己編出來的，而是托福題目中所括號補充出來的，用這類名詞的題
目非常多
For successful development of a country, should a government focus its
budget more on very young children (5 to 10 years old) education rather than
on universities?

Young children在此題的觀念上和大學生做了對比
前者是，幼稚園和國小學童，而他們的心智尚未成熟，屬於啟蒙時期，花錢投資在此年齡
層上，可以啟發學童立定志向或是引發對某個知識或學科的興趣，他們是未來的主人翁、
未來的成就是基於現在的投資，然而，因為他們這個年齡還小，未來的不確定性也高，故
不知成效如何，有可能只是浪費錢。
一樣，在這題目中，還有一個很重要的”區塊”，那就是 “國家的成功發展”，所以題
目不是只有投資在哪一個年齡層較好，而是要基於“國家的成功發展”前提下去發展你的
論點。(更多類似題目，請看最後一頁)

二、大家一般知道的概念:如College students or high school students:
在解題上，以剛剛那一題來說，”大學生”是屬於高等教育，有專精的學科和可能已經決
定好要研究的領域，故對國家發展是屬於可以立竿見影，或對國家高科技以及突破性研究
都是可以有很好成就的，如比爾蓋茲(Bill Gates)、Steven Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg等都
是在接受高等教育時，具體了自己的夢想。
另外，題目中的主角如果用了”High school students”而不用”college students”也
都是有理由的，我們來看看這個題目:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: All high-school
students should take basic economic courses.

這個題目的主角是高中生，也就是說，這一個族群的年輕學子，通常都還是很依賴家裡的
財務資助，都是在使用父母親的錢，所以還尚未知道賺錢的辛苦，可能會隨著資本主義的
價值跟著同學買昂貴的物品、花錢沒有紀錄、有錢就使用完而沒錢時再跟父母親要，當然
也不是全部的高中生都是這樣，或許，你不苟同題目覺得他們這個年紀有更重要的事情要
去學，不可讓費時間在經濟課上，故要看同學的立場是什麼，再去作證自己的論點。

這邊補充一個定義 Economic courses:

Economic courses deal with the production, distribution, and consumption of
goods and services and with the theory and management of economies. In other
words, it is about material wealth in management for now and for the days to
come.

同樣的，這一期的托福真經班，也聚焦了一題新的題目:
A high school is thinking about making one of the following classes a
required class for high school students,
(a) personal finance management,
(b) cooking class
(c) or auto repair.
Which option will you recommend high school students to take at school and
why?

威廉老師建議寫 (a)personal finance management, 因為議題深度廣，比較好談，而且
在這邊的主角，也是高中生喔! 以下幾個論點，提供同學參考:
Personal finance management concept helps young people to
1. trace spending habits
2. correct value of money
3. save money for future goals

三、年老的: 這類的題目，通常用Grandparents 或是 “20, 50 years”來做區隔:
首先，題目是採取”隔兩代”的時空而不用”父母”這個詞就是怕沒太大的差異。
如有一題題目是這樣:
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
The advices from grandparents have no use for their grandchildren because the
world has changed a lot during the past 50 years.

之前有同學寫這一篇時，時間性拖太長去了，開頭寫 “In the ancient time,
grandparents…”我想，你的祖父母看到，你可能會”被揍”或是過年紅包就要大縮水了

四、未來的時間:題目會有，20 years from now, 50 years from now, in your life
time(差不多是五六十年左右，一樣不要寫太誇張說”會和外星人一起共事”或”到火星旅遊
”),thirty days from now.
(小心!要用未來式，下次會另闢一個單元和同學談談這個主題)題目如:
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In twenty years from
now, students will not use printed books any more.

五、其他數字概念: 如題目: Do you agree or disagree with the following
statement?
Students could receive a better, more efficient education if they spend 11
months a year studying. (學生一年應該上課十一個月)

同學看到這題題目，一定很納悶，為什麼有”11”這個數字。
托福現在的題目，要會分析和了解題意。那”11”在這個題目，是什麼意思呢?
答案是迳”多花一點時間學習，會不會比較有效率。”
因為以正常的學校體制來說，我們有寒暑假(因TOEFL是考非美國人，故只要解釋放假的方
式，都可以被認可。)以及一些其它國定假日，加起來約放4個月，也就是說，一年是學習
“8”個月，相較於題目的”11”個月，是學習較少，可利用時間相對變多。
哪一種方式較好以及有效? 題目的主人翁是”students”，沒有特定是哪一個範圍(算有
良心，因為侷限會更難寫) ，只要泛泛之論的學生概念或是”切分”迳以小學生來說、中
學生來說、大學生來說，都是可以。

題目的隱含也有比較級的使用，因為要說比較好或是不好，一定要有比較物，也就是說，
和一般教育體系比的話，真的是比較好又有效嗎?

思維有點像正班的二、三周作業
Spend all the time on the academic study or spare some time for physical
exercise in daily life.

As Benjamin Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best
interest.” For students as well as schools, they all try to adopt a more
efficient way for better education. Is spending 11 months a year studying in
a year more sensible than spending more time a year for this purpose? (對於題
目談一個General又繞主題的起頭)To me, personally, I do not agree with the
statement and consider spending less than 11 months a year for studying at
school is better and of more efficiency.(清楚、有方向的立場)

To begin with, a more desirable education is not only confined to school
studying.(自己立場的原因一) With 11 months a year studying at school, students
’ time for their leisure is, by comparison, reduced. In regular education
system in my country, students have more than four month vacation, including
summer and winter vacation, new year vacation and other national holidays.
Learning should not only be based only on academic studies or on books.(連結主
題) With less school time, students can take time out to learn from various
sources outside the school settings, such as short-term overseas study,
backpackers, part-time jobs, clubs and the forth; those all need extra time
spent for an ideal result. (解釋題目) According to Time Magazine, almost all
500 top entrepreneurs worldwide foster many successful factors outside
schools. They make great use of time socializing with people, learning
leadership and communication skills. Those extra-curricular activities enable
students to broaden their perspectives for the world, which is advantageous
to them down the road. (Specific細節) Thus, in terms of education, students
can be more effective and successful if they have more vacation time from
school than just one month long in this issue.(再拉回主題立場)

Secondly, students need to rest more in order to be productive in learning
more. (自己立場的原因二)Without doubts, spending 11 months a year studying
makes students study more and concentrate more in what they do as academic
study; however, this is not efficient in term of using time. (連結主題) With
more time studying, it means less time doing leisure and resting. In our
society due to competiveness, students are under pressure and excessive
stress for being on the top of the class. Only one month vacation in a school
year cannot make them relieved and released the stress accumulated in a year.
(解釋題目) If they spend 11 months a year in school, they cannot totally let
go of stress accumulated in the whole year and this is not productive for
them to learn something new. Detrimental to students, the stress and pressure
will reduce their productivity and something innovation. For a global stand
of view, they will lose their competiveness and unable to conquer new
challenges down the road. Many students suffer from depression or have
suicidal tendency because of too much work and too less rest time. (Specific細
節) Therefore, for a better and more effective way of education for young
students, it is always advisable to have more time resting so that they can
make better use of time for resting and learning. (再拉回主題立場)
