口說一、二題囧境 - 英檢

嗯，您的 id 取得好－"be staunch"。"staunch" 是個很有力道的形容詞－
　　源於古英文（Old English）的 "stalwart" 是其一級近義字－如果是動
詞用法，美式的拼法是 "stanch"；"staunch" 與 "stanch" 是同源的。

稍微玩玩押韻和文字意象，我們就能創作出下面這個類似勵志語的句子：

　　Be staunch, ready to launch.
（堅定意志，隨時都能猛力開展。）

以上博君一粲，以下言歸正傳。


bestaunch，從現在起，練習時都要用下面兩個準則嚴格檢視自己的
response，這樣您的問題就可以得到解決－

　　一、一定要直接回應到問題〔answer questions directly; make
sure to address what you're asked to (address)〕

所謂的「切題」、「不要離題」都是在說這個。一旦偏題，我
們會感覺「怎麼這麼難答」、「好像講再多也無法交代清楚我
腦中的想法」，因此經常無法在時間內說完；就算說完了，也
會因為沒有完全達到題目的要求而掉不少分。

　　　　一個理由就是一個主題句－我們一定要確認這個主題句有明確
回應到題目、服務到自己選擇的立場。以射擊遊戲來說，每個
主題句打到題目都該是 "critical hit"－白話一點就是「爆
頭（headshot）」。

以您提出的這個問題為例，題目要求一定要擊殺到的點是「學
生提出和老師不同的意見」，而您第二個做法中的舉例部分其
實沒有直接迎擊這點（主要是因為您措詞還不夠精確、表達效
率還不大好的關係）。另外，canada0714 說您「突然牽到錢
有點怪」是對的－它跟 "disagree" 沒有直接關係，只會分散
了您論證的力道。

二、舉例一定要非常非常限定、具體（always be very, very spe-
cific when giving examples）

一旦養成這種習慣，口說答題會輕鬆許多，不會再有「要講的
東西好複雜啊」這種「根本無法處理」或「不可能處理得完」
的感覺。

　　　　以這個問題來說，"disagree" 可能的情境（scenario）實在
太多了：學生覺得國文老師口誤；學生覺得鋼琴教授對舒伯
特音樂的整體評價有所偏頗；學生覺得數學老師這題一定算
錯了…（無限延綿）…光是大方向上就有兩種可能：是討論
「事實（fact）」（好比科學常識），還是只是「個人意見
　　　　（opinion）」（好比對時事的看法）不同？

這就是為何我們有時會覺得「很複雜」的原因－托福口說一、
二的題目都設計得很 "general"（獨立寫作題目當然也是），
讓大家都好發揮，但也正因為「好發揮」，如果我們舉例時
不主動把範圍縮小到只講一個「情境非常特定」的切題例子
的話，我們永遠會有「沒搔到題目癢處」的感覺。
　　
這兩個原則目的都是在幫我們「聚焦」，使我們論證的力道集中、
不發散。

It is totally appropriate that students disagree with an
instructor, because disagreement often makes discussions
more effective.

For example, after explaining something, sometimes an
instructor would ask his students, "Don't you think so?"
If one of them says no, the instructor would often
go on to explain more－maybe like giving them an extra
example－so he can convince his students. In the end,
that student may be convinced and the whole class also
learn more from the instructor.

至於第二點，可以這樣修改主題句讓它更切題：

嚴格說起來，您從 "For example, if students and ..." 起其實都
沒有提到、回應到題目要的 "disagree"－"gives his own opinion"
在您這個前後文裡其實沒有明確確立「這個意見和老師的意見是相左
的」這件事。

It is totally appropriate that students disagree with an
instructor.

First, the instructor might in fact be wrong. If a student
spots a mistake the instructor has made during class but
chooses not to say anything just because students are
asked not to disagree with an instructor, his classmates
would end up learning something incorrect!

Second, a little challenge often leads to perfect
instruction. When an instructor is contradicted by his
students, he would usually expend more effort to illuminate
and justify the truth. As a result, students get the most
out of the instruction.


各位可能還是好奇：「老師，要如何舉出『非常非常限定、具體』的
切題例子？有什麼撇步嗎？」

　　訣竅只有一個：「用自己的生活經驗」－也就是說，從您自己熟悉的
人事物下手。第一個好處－因為是親身經歷，講起來特別順、特別有
感覺；第二個好處－因為是個人經歷，rater 聽起來會覺得特別有意
思（"Finally, something unhackneyed! Thank God!"），講得好又
切題的話他／她絕對打特別高分。

「可是老師，有時候一個切題的個人經驗很複雜耶，這樣還可以在口
說答題中使用嗎？會不會講不完？」

　　當然可以！－因為我們可以改編！把很多其實不重要的背景、細節都
刪除，視狀況改編一些條件，只留下這個經驗的「骨幹」，這樣就非
常好講了。

不囉嗦，馬上給各位一個具體示範！

　　其實我自己第一眼看到 bestaunch 的這個題目時，15 秒內我想到的
理由是類似上述的 "the instructor might in fact be wrong"，而
支持的具體例子則是想到我下述的生活經驗：

　　有一次，一個學生和我討論 GMAT 的 Critical Reasoning，當我們
談到「前提（premise）」時，我發覺她的發音錯了－重音抓錯，是
"Premise"，不是 "preMise"（如果是動詞用法，發成 "preMise"
才比較合理）。她告訴我，因為 A2 是這樣發這個單字的（她當時
有補 A2 GMAT），所以她才這樣發。我們當下就查證牛津和韋氏兩
大權威字典（記住，牛津是英式英語權威，而韋氏是美式英語權威），
發現 "premise" 當名詞時重音果然在第一音節…

（各位，為了教學直接老實寫出這件事我一點都不覺得尷尬－畢竟，
　　如果 A2 從來就沒有把這個字的音發錯，我也寫不出這樣的事情。
質疑與被質疑本來就該這樣－大家都落落大方，沒有什麼好迴避的。
「指正錯誤、質疑精神等，這些早該在台灣被發揚光大了。質疑者
與被質疑者，彼此落落大方，被質疑者發現自己錯了後非常坦率，
而且很高興自己又修正了一個觀念；質疑者發現結果是自己錯了也
非常坦率，而且很高興自己又多學到了－以上這些並不應該讓我們
所有人覺得尷尬才對啊！這樣才是正常的！！這樣所有人都能學得
更好、更有效率，而且沒有人能再把另一個人不公義地騙得團團轉。」
所以，認識 A2 的人可以趕快告訴他要改正這個字的發音，以免繼
續誤導更多台灣學生發錯這個字的音－記住，被自己同胞糾正總比
出國後被外國人糾正來得好！畢竟各位在外都代表著台灣。）

顯然，我不可能原原本本講出這件事來發展我的主題句，所以我以
「方便說出這個故事」為準則，答題時就很自然地改編這個梗，最

I raised my hand and said, "It's Premise, not preMise, Mr.
Helmsley." He looked it up on Merriam-Webster.com right
away and said, "You're right, Dean. I'm so glad you
corrected me." Truth is, a good teacher thrives on
challenges from students. He continues to learn, even from
his very own pupils－no wonder I remember Mr. Helmsley as
a very outstanding instructor.

好講），但中心的切題梗還在。Helmsley 是我臨時編的姓，錄完
後我仔細思考才發覺這個姓是《2012》這部電影中那位黑人博士的
姓（Dr. Adrian Helmsley）－我當時看這部電影時就覺得這個姓
的發音超好聽！

　　如果我是一位職業作家，我給欲從事寫作的人的建言也會是：「寫
您知道的東西就對了！」

　　總結：「說您知道的東西就對了！（Say what you know!）」
