大家好,我是SK2 David,
之前看了ETS 開設的托福口說公開課,雖然大部分是在介紹題型,
然而也有部分提到了建議的解題方法,
這些方法和我對托福口說的想法頗為一致,
於是節錄下來,和一些我之前針對托福口說寫的分析文章,
一起和同學們分享,希望對大家有幫助:
ETS 的說法:
Q1
In your response, you should give and discuss at least one reason
to help explain why you like that type of book. It is OK to give
more than one reason for why you like a certain type of book, but
you should be careful not to only state a list of reasons without
providing any explanations or details to support the reasons.
Rather, a good approach is to try to focus on one reason and
discuss it in detail. To support your reason, you could talk about
a specific book, an experience with a certain type of book, or
some other experience or story that explains why you like that
type of book.
我在口說課時,也建議同學在口說一二題時,給一個理由就好,
剩下的時間,拿來發展例子(或反例——可講可不講),
這樣的想法,出自於我托福第五戰時的經驗:
(口說一二題的理由)從兩個理由改成一個,
開始前,比較不需要「想」點,也不怕忘記,
只需要專注在「提出細節」和「反例」,
再來,平常就讓自己習慣說話時,
去把一件事情「解釋清楚」、「提出細節」、「舉出反例」,
就不需要擔心考口說時「想不到很多點」,讓自己緊張,
這也就是說,理由的多寡、好壞都不是重點,
重點是能不能提出足夠的、能夠說服人「這就是為什麼我要選這個答案」的
細節。

接下來我們來看看很容易「照著錯誤模板講」的口說第五題,
ETS 的說法:
Q5
You are not required to summarize both of these solutions in your
response. You can summarize them both if you like, but spending
time talking about both solutions might not leave you with enough
time to make a recommendation and explain your reasons for it. It
is important that in your response you both choose a solution and
explain why you think it is the best solution.
口說課上,我發現很多同學先前考試時,都會使用網路上找到的有問題模板,
把兩個solution完完整整、甚或加油添醋的講出來,
如同上面ETS 所說的,這樣做只會浪費你解釋你推薦哪一邊的時間。
之前,我寫過一篇「第五題常見的模板分析」,用意也在提醒同學,
許多第五題「常見模板」的句子都是沒有意義的,只會浪費你回答的時間,
讓你無法講重點,於是常常有「講不完」的困擾,
該文節錄如下:
相信各位從網上、從補習班拿到的許多模板都是長這樣的:
1. The two people in the conversation are talking about a
problem.
2. The problem is (problem)
3. S/he feels (emotion) because because s/he can't do both at
the same time.
4. The (wo)man proposes two solutions to the problem.
5. First, s/he could (solution 1).
6. Second, s/he could (solution 2).
7. For me, I prefer (solution 2)
8. Because (short reason)
我們首先來判斷這樣的模板,回答的「內容」是否做到最基本的「切題」,
還是只是搪塞一些廢話,拖拖時間,讓你自我感覺良好,
檢測的方式,就是去看第五題的「原題」在問什麼。
隨便找一回TPO 後面的題目,你會發現題目只問三件事:
1. Briefly summarize the problem.
2. State which of the two solutions you would recommend.
3. Explain the reasons for your recommendation.
再回過頭來看這個模板的8 句話,你會發現這個模板充斥著多餘的句子,
第一句話:
1. The two people in the conversation are talking about a
problem.
這不用說了,一聽就是模板,
引用之前我的分享文中,ETS 說過的話:
「評分官受過訓練,聽過這麼多答案,要判斷有沒有模板,是很容易的事情。」
「有模板的答案,是不會得到好分數的。」
第二句話:
2. The problem is (problem)
這句話是必要的,也是破題的唯一選擇,
第三句話:
3. S/he feels (emotion) because s/he can't do both at the same
time.
這句話是廢話,
接著是重點的4, 5, 6 句,我們一起看這三句:
4. The (wo)man proposes two solutions to the problem.
5. First, s/he could (solution 1).
6. Second, s/he could (solution 2).
請注意「題目並沒有問」對話中出現哪兩個選項,
題目直截了當,問了"WHICH" of the two solutions you would recommend,
評分官想要直接聽到「你選哪一個」,
故不需要第四句告訴我們「有兩個solution」,
也不需要在此五六句告訴我們「分別是哪兩個solution」!
策略性的重複solution可以,可以在內容不足的情況下,勉強維持流暢度,
但是如果你在看這篇文章,代表你有時間事先準備,
那就請不要重複solution,直接回答重點問題「為什麼你選這個」,
確保最重要的「切題」!

尤其是「打算寫好模板,完全照著模板念」的同學,
好好看看你各題的模板,對照一下題目,
哪些句子是根本就不該出現的,那些句子只會壓縮你本來可以好好回答的時間,
造成你文不對題,口說分數就是上不去!
