閱讀

1. 火對植物和森林的好處
有機物質decomposition, 火可以加快分解，讓dead plant的nutrient被
living plant absorb,如果不被fire燒，dead plants可以在那兒繼續待在那
裏10年
提到滅火policy, 但是其實救了火下次更容易著火，讓他自己燒的話可以把
太dense 的 forest燒掉一部分，然後沒有fuel可以燒，另外的火就燒不起來
。
講到Yellowstone National Park, 在某年發生場大火，但燒掉之後出現以前
都沒有的新物種。

2. 歐洲城市建築發展史
提到Greek和Italy, 第一段還提到Baroque和另一種風格，之前的建築都是為
了展現城市, state 還有教堂的wealth和status
中間提到Napolean, 支持一個French但其實原本是Swiss的建物師來重新規劃
城市，讓城市有更多燈光，生態環境更好，修了更多monuments和廣場的
public建築，有利於管理城市因為一目了然叛亂者不好隱藏。
最後講到modern建築，made of glass, concrete，理念是將整個城市當做一
個機器，manufacturer, transportation遠離市中心。

3. active lizards and sit-and-wait lizards
Sit-and-wait lizards不愛動，喜歡待在rock and tree trunk上，身體顏色
跟background相似，可以保護自己，吃愛動的insects,被愛動的predator吃
, tail短
有提到anaerobic metabolism
Active lizards
顏色很醒目，特別是跑起來的時候，吃不愛動的insects,被不愛動的
predator吃，吃large group的insect, ex. termite; tail長
aerobic metabolism, 運動可以sustain, 有larger hearts, 更多red
blood cells
倒數第二段最後一句提到兩種的tail都在被predator抓的時候會斷
最後一段提到了ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) ; sit-and-wait lizards用
glycogen, 可以直接用，但是不sustain, 動一會兒就萎了。active

Conversation 1
圖書館要翻修，男童學問會有什麼影響，會不會關閉？整修之後學生學習的
區域會增加，還會變得environmental (有題) 老師還介紹說整修的話是一次
一小部分。夏天的時候可能會暫時關閉，因為那個時候學生比較少。後來學
生問到了三樓的情況，那裡原來都是一個人一個小空間學習的，老師就問說
你一定是graduate student吧，學生說不是的，我是要幫教授做一個特殊的
project, 所以才在那裡。老師說這樣就不能在那裡繼續念了，因為所有座位
重新分配之後只會給graduate student, 學生表示去別的地方很為難，好像
說可以去student center, 但是他不願意去，因為他做這個project很多
resources在圖書館，需要來回跑不方便，而且噪音很多。最後說教教授寫信
看能不能解決。

Lecture 2 人主觀對動物智商的評價，說了狗和羊，因為狗跟人接觸頻繁和
被訓練，會有像握手這樣類似人的動作，被認為比較聰明。其實羊也可以被
訓練，也可以記住人臉。

Conversation 2 教授表揚男生說作業寫的很好，讓學生去一個地方當
turor, 輔導學生寫paper。老師說現在有的學生論文還不錯，但是organize
的能力不好。男生說自己是念生物的，不是英語系的，老師說沒關係，說不
定會碰到生物係的學生要寫paper。

1. 朋友要give a presentation，給建議。
2. 老師回答問題by email or in person，喜歡哪一個。
3. 學校reduce energy use 玻璃換成厚的, 每天九點後才能開窗。男生同意
，離窗戶近冷，replace window好；不是所以人都在building待到很晚，
shut down open time helpful，學生可去student center。
4. animal signal，講動物會發chemical signal對自己和別的動物都要好處

5. 一男的要寫關於美國文學paper，但是他要回家因為要幫她媽過生日 , 一
個打電話cancel, may feel sorry, 第二個帶回家寫，但無法專心。
6. 兩個讓experience更enjoyable的方法 兩點Variety和timing
