Matsu: A beautiful pearl the Min River estuary

Matsu, which is part of the Republic of China but is situated on the
coastline of mainland China, offers not only a distinct battlefield
landscape, but also a rich cultural and historical background and scenery
that gives the former battle fortress a character loaded with extraordinary
charm. Matsu is indeed very close to China, which is only 9.5 km away at the
nearest spot. Thus it has served as a front-line outpost for Taiwan since
1949. Unlike Kinmen, which has endured some incredibly bloody conflicts in
the past sixty years, Matsu has memories that are largely more mysterious
than painful. The ROC government did not lift military rule over the island
until 1992, and it was 1994 when tourists were finally allowed to visit this
dream land on the other side of the Taiwan Strait...

與臺灣隔海相望的馬祖，不只擁有獨特的戰地景觀，深厚的歷史人文背景及景物風光
，讓這座昔日的戰地堡壘，透出不凡而又迷人的氣質。
　　馬祖，一個昔日被稱為戰地的地方，由於地理位置與中國大陸相隔甚近，民國38年以
來，注定背負國防前哨的命運，塵封長達數10年之久。它不似金門歷經血雨腥風的洗禮，
戰地氣息少了點傷痛，反而多了些神秘。
　　直到民國81年政府宣布戰地政務解除，83年開放觀光，才讓遊客有機會探訪這片有如
夢境般的海上桃花源......
