if you just want to stay in dorms, it is not really difficult to get
one since you are overseas students in london for the first time (i assume).
you just need to keep following up, i.e., keep bothering
the accommodation office. even if they don't want to offer you a room,
(right, it is usually they don't want to, not they really can't)
they might be able to help by passing a list of private landlords to you.

why?

i think you should aim to find a place to stay, dorm rooms or a double
room for both of you, for, say, three months or half a year. once you
know london better you'll be in a better position to consider the long-term
plan, to think about the location, types of the accommodation, your budget,
etc.

most of the time you only get sublet or flat share at hello uk.
you'll have to share the property with others. so the problem is usually
not about the room but about you and your flatmates.

it depends on the condition of the room. but i think for the rent at such a
price at such locations it should be above avg.

but, of course, you have two persons occupying the room, so it puts up
the price per room a little bit.
