1.Se concentration was low at the time of admission to the ICU in
patients with severe sepsis. This is consistent with previous studies,
which have reported a 40% decrease in plasma Se levels in ICU patients
as compared to the healthy population .

2.The exact function of plasma GSH-Px is not known but an increased
concentration of plasma GSH-Px suggests the increased antioxidant
activity in plasma. Our study did not show any significant change in
RBC GSH-Px by day 14 in either group, reflecting the slow turnover
of erythrocyte GSH-Px activity.

3.The most likely explanation for our failure to replicate the finding
of Angstwurm et al. is the small number of patients in both studies and
likely heterogeneity of the patient population.

4.The outcome measures should include not only mortality but also
other aspects of organ function ,including the need for RRT.
