◎ 例文：

The island fox (Urocyon Littoralis), a tiny version of the mainland grey
fox, exists only on six of the eight Santa Barbara Channel Islands, which
are positioned in coastal waters nearthe California mainland. Contemporary
investigation suggests that mainland foxes probably occupied the northern
islands some 16,000-20,000 years ago when the islands were virtually linked
to the mainland. Chumash tribes, who kept foxes as pets, are assumed to have
transported the mainland foxes to the southern islands around 10,000 years ago.
Being confined to separate islands over time, the foxes first evolved into a
distinct species from the mainland fox, and then into additional subspecies
for each of the six islands that they inhabit.
