The professor is discussing how the loon’s two types of feather
help protect it from cold water, which are
contour feathers and down feathers.
First, contour feathers, they are the outer layer of the loon’s
body and they keep the loon dry because they are water-repellent.
They are tightly packed together so water can't go through.
The feathers are also oily and oil repels water. These two
features help loon stays dry.
Second, down feathers, they are underneath contour feathers.
They are fluffy, think and dense.
And the location is between the loon's skin and the contour feathers.
This helps insulate the loon, helping it stay warm.
