底下是摘錄自知音閱讀I(篇名:Soil)中的一小段文字:

"The organic matter in the earth's soil comes from the remains of the
many plants and animals for which the soil serves as habitat, ... "

請問在第二句中間的for which的文法意義是什麼? which是指代什麼東西呢?

又為什麼要加for呢?
