2011 Validity Study

Educational Testing Service (ETS®) conducts many research studies each year. These studies help us improve our tests as well as various products and services for test takers and score users.

Description of the Study
We are conducting a study to determine if the computer a candidate uses to take the TOEFL iBT test (either a computer provided by ETS or the candidate’s own personal computer) impacts their performance on the test. Thus we are interested in having candidates who are registered to take TOEFL iBT in a Prometric Center, also take a free TOEFL iBT test on their own laptop in a proctored facility so we can analyze their performance on both tests. All candidates in this study will receive an official TOEFL
iBT score for the free test they take on their own laptops in the designated proctored locations. The free test can be taken up to 3 weeks before or after the TOEFL iBT test the candidate is already registered for, and each candidate will have the option to choose which of the two scores they would like to report to their designated institution(s). Delivering high-stakes tests on candidate laptops in proctored facilities has the potential of opening up a wider range of testing venues, which could
provide more testing dates and locations for candidates to choose from in the future.

We are contacting you because you are presently registered to take the TOEFL iBT and we would like you to participate in this study.

Participant Requirements and Benefits
If you agree to participate, in addition to your regularly scheduled TOEFL iBT exam, you will also take a free TOEFL iBT on your own laptop in a proctored facility. You will receive two official sets of scores: one from your regularly scheduled TOEFL iBT exam (given at a Prometric Center) and the score from this TOEFL iBT Validity Study. You will be free to choose which of these two scores to report to your designated institution(s). Your scores for both tests will arrive in the standard reporting
timeframe (typically within 2 weeks of your test date).

In order to participate in this study, you must meet these requirements:
· You must own a Windows laptop computer that’s less than 4 years old and meets the following specifications:
o Windows XP, Vista, or Win 7 Operating System
o Diagonal screen size of 12 inches or larger
o A minimum of 1024 x 768 screen resolution
o Built-In Wireless Internet connection capability (e.g. WiFi)
o Audio recording & playback capabilities
· You must have a valid photo ID
· You cannot use any Apple Macintosh computers for testing
· Prior to the test date, you must download & run software on your laptop (this is a 200Kb download). This software will determine if your laptop is capable of running our test delivery system. If our software determines that your laptop is capable of running our test delivery system, you must bring the same laptop with you to the test site. ETS will provide you with technical assistance if you encounter problems downloading or running this software.

Please note that we may ask some participants to test on an ETS laptop.

The testing date for this study is Saturday, November 5, 2011, or Saturday, November 19, 2011, at the following locations:

The testing session will take approximately 5 hours which includes check-in, setup, and testing time. Candidates will be asked to report to the test site between 8:30a – 9:30a, and will start their tests between 9:00a – 10:00a. You must bring your own laptop computer to the testing session. Light snacks will be available during the break and after the test.

If you would like to participate, please complete the attached questionnaire and e-mail it to [email protected] as soon as possible. We will select candidates on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are selected to participate, we will contact you to schedule your test.
