(Sentence simplification question)

題目是

The extreme seriousness of desertification results from the vast areas of land
and the tremendous numbers of people affected, as well as from the great diffi-
culty of reversing or even slowing the process.

書上給的答案是

Desertification is a significant problem because it is so hard to reverse and
affects large areas of land and great numbers of people.

就我的理解是...題目是說"沙漠化是...造成的"(...desertification results from...)
, 可是答案的意思應該是"沙漠化影響了..."(desertification...affects... and...)

所以我看不出來意思沒有改變啊=.= 請前輩們賜教一下XD
