Archaeologists agree that the cylinder seal was invented in southern
Mesopotamia around 3500 BCE, although another kind of seal, the relatively
simple stamp seal, may date as far back as 8,000 years ago. The techniques
used for creating the image on the cylinder changed over time. Prior to about
1750 BCE the main method was a technique of chipping out designs with small
chisels. When seen through an electron microscope the surface of designs made
through chipping appear pitted and rough. An alternative method was the use
of small handheld files. This method was used throughout the history of
seal-making although it flourished most widely from 1750 BCE to 1300 BCE.
Also at this time artisans used small rotating drills, and these allowed them
to produce circular and semicircular shapes, which were incorporated into the
figures in minute detail. From this, the most advanced method of engraving on
the cylinders developed, a rotating wheel powered by a bow. This technology
permitted faster production but required very skilled workmanship.
