2007.09.12
Independent Question Type 1
What is the most important characteristic of an apartment or a house?
I think a good apartment should have good firefighting equipment, such as
fire extinguisher, fire hydrant, and jacklight. Because of functions of the
well firefighting equipment, they can safeguard my life and, additionally, it
makes me feel secure. Yesterday, the news stated that there was a fire
accident, causing some casualties and, inevitably, their family looked very
heartbroken. Last year, there were 3,300 fires in total, that means, an
average of 9 fires were happened each day. At that moment, I was just aware
of the importance of precaution against fire.
Independent Question Type 2
When going to the concerts or films do you prefer alone or with a group of
friends?
I prefer going to the concerts or films with my friends, not only because
this is to my profit, but because I also can enjoy interaction with my
friends. For example, Popcorn and cola are indispensable for seeing a movie,
so buying a combo is cheaper than buying them separately. Moreover, the more
we share each other’s interest or mood, the more we enjoy the good time.
Besides, we can talk about our favorite singer or actor after the concert or
film. This helps us further our deepest friendship.
Integrated Question Type 3
There is an announcement about a Student’s Proposal of inviting entrepreneur
to deliver lectures in the university. He thinks that this will benefit
school, because the businessmen play important roles in the society. However,
the female student opposes the idea, because there were already enough
lectures given by business people. School should invite famous teacher to add
variety, and this can give rise to educational circles’ concern. Moreover,
she doubts that lectures given by businessmen will form advertisement to
attract more students, because their business program has already had an
excellent reputation. They should make educational program known to students.
Integrated Question Type 4
The reading passage is describing the social desirability bias. It is a term
used to describe the tendency of respondents to reply in a manner that will
be viewed favorably by others. This will generally take the form of
over-reporting good behavior or under-reporting bad behavior. A hypothetical
example of social desirability bias would be a study of sexual behavior. When
confronted with question “Do you masturbate? If so, how often?”, a
respondent may be influenced by the societal taboo of masturbation, and
either falsely claiming not to masturbate or downright refuse to answer the
question.
Integrated Question Type 5
The man feels worried, because he is going to work voluntarily in a lab but
he needs money. The woman suggests that he can work in a book store on
weekends or share the lab internship with someone else.
If I were in his shoes, I would find a part-time job on weekends. Because the
book store provides the latest information and references, I can use these
resources to enrich my knowledge and, automatically, this can also be
conductive to my internship. Moreover, if I can be adequate to the internship
by myself, this will help me leave the professor a good impression, and maybe
he will write a recommendation for me to apply for attending graduate school.
Integrated Question Type 6
The professor is describing two principles of persuasion; persuasion is
strategy of problem-solving relying on appeals rather than strength.
The most widely accepted weapon of influence is Authority - People will tend
to obey authority figures. For example, Smokey Bear’s message “Only You Can
Prevent Forest Fires” was created to raise public awareness to protect
American forests. Since the campaign’s inception, the area lost annually has
gone from 22 million to 4,000,000 acres.
The other one is Social Proof – People will do things that they see other
people are doing. For example, one would do recycling; neighbors would then
do recycling to see a wise man and try to emulate him.
